1.    What’s on the LSAT?

The LSAT is a skills-based exam that tests your ability to evaluate arguments and to make logical deductions from the information they give you. Although it does not require outside knowledge, such as math or grammar, you are required to know a few logical terms and rules. In short, it tests your understanding of logic and reasoning.

2.    How long does the LSAT take?

The test takes about 4 hours, which is divided between six 35-minute sections. The first five sections are multiple-choice and the last one is a writing sample. The writing sample, however, is not graded and does not affect your final score.

3.    What’s a good score?

Your score can range anywhere from 120 to 180. Most test-takers score in the middle of that range, around 150. If you’re aiming for a top-10 school and have relatively good GPA, a 170 or higher is competitive for most of those schools.

4.    When can I take the LSAT?

The LSAT is administered four times a year:

  • February
  • June
  • October (or end of September)
  • December

5.    When should I take the LSAT?

Because law schools start accepting applications in September—about a year before classes start—most applicants take the LSAT in October. June, though, is probably the best month because you can retake the LSAT in October if necessary and still apply early. That said, if you take the test in October and need to retake it, you can do so in December and still apply before law schools stop accepting applications in January or February.

Granted, you can also take the February exam and still apply to some schools, but often it’s too late. If you’re considering the February LSAT, check with the schools that interest you to see if they accept it.

To learn more about when you should take the LSAT, read the JD Admissions Timeline.

6.    How long does it take to prepare?

Most test-takers need about two to three months to prepare. Some take as long as six months or a year, while others take only a month.

7.    How can Strategy help me?

Whether you’re looking for a full-length course or private tutoring, we can help you prepare for the LSAT by teaching you the logical rules that you need to know, by giving you strategies to apply those rules quickly, and by hosting weekly practice exams so you can take many official LSATs under actual test conditions.
